Bliss or blast?
The Moon in the 8th house
The 8th whole sign house is usually associated with loss and death, hardship and debts. Since it’s one of the four places in aversion to the Ascendant, it is generally considered unfortunate. The aversion, in more modern psychological terms, refers to places within us that are hard to access, and gaining a full understanding of them might require not only a lot of work but also mirroring ourselves through others.
The 8th house is not a cadent place where things can sometimes get stuck or where abilities are lacking. On the contrary, the 8th quadrant house is called a succedent, advancing place. A planet in the 8th house is dynamically enabled to bring its purpose forward.
In traditional astrology, the 8th place is often associated with alchemy; indeed, there is some kind of process that needs to take place before moving forward. Sometimes it is about letting go, taking courage, or learning hard lessons, but of the kind we will appreciate later on.
The 8th house is like an onion: the old skin needs to make space for the new one, which is more in sync with our place in life.
So what about the Moon in the 8th house?
This will entirely depend on sect and the lunar phase.
If it’s a diurnal chart and the luminary is not in one of her own places, then the Moon is powerless in a difficult house.
But if the chart is nocturnal, the situation changes greatly. Since the luminary is an inferior “planet”, she is stronger in the west. Indeed, the crescent starts getting visible on the western horizon, when the Sun is sufficiently below the horizon. But where exactly she will become visible, in terms of her (natal) chart position depends on the geographical latitude: the further north from the equator a native is born, the greater the distance between the Sun and the Moon usually needs to be. The crescent can become visible at a 15° distance (in places rather close to the equator), but this is otherwise a rather rare condition and would put the Moon in the 7th whole sign house. Atmospheric conditions would need to agree with such a short distance visibility.
However, she usually starts to become visible to the layman 2 or 3 days after New Moon when she is about 30° of longitude away from the Sun. This means that if the Sun has just set, the Moon becomes visible in the 8th whole-sign place. We can also say that (in this case) the Moon has her heliacal rising in the 8th place. The exact sighting condition will, of course, again, depend on latitude and atmospheric conditions, which is why ancient cultures had astronomers looking out for the first light from different places.
Because of the (initially) small distance from the Sun, the Moon will be visible only for a short time during the night, but the first sighting of the Moon has always been associated with hope and new life rather than death and despair.
Therefore, in a nocturnal chart, an 8th house New Moon describes strength and courage rather than fear and weakness: somebody who stands up after a fall and tries again until success is secured. This is the bliss.
However, the just-discussed strength only applies to the Crescent. A waning 8th house Moon, on the other hand, is first of all invisible, because she sets after the Sun. But the waning Moon would also describe the end of a phase rather than the beginning, and since she is not in her own sect, she would struggle more in the 8th. This is the blast.
